Munier states that the fruit was introduced at the end of the 13th century and at the beginning of the 14th century in the areas of Biskra and Oued Righ in Algeria before being brought to Tunisia at the end of the 17th century by a grower from Tozeur named Sidi Touati. On apprend surtout dans l'étude de Munier que le fruit y est introduit à la fin du XIIIe siècle ou au début du XIVe siècle depuis Tolga vers les environs de Biskra jusqu'à l'oued Righ puis vers 1600 dans le Sud tunisien par un planteur de Tozeur dénommé Sidi Touati.
